At least CMSS-3D was intelligent enough to disable on any 5.1 sources. I can't believe Creative would have the Surround effect force on everything. I'm using a receiver so I find DTS Connect w/ Neo PC is doing a much better job at upmixing when needed, and I can always force a stereo upmix using Potplayer for media files. EQ I've messed with a bit but I find it seems better with it off. This external USB sound card keeps everything good about its predecessor and adds a couple of interesting additions to the mix, most notably SmartComm Kita combination of features aimed at improving our online call quality. However, I have the Crystalizer way up and I feel it really helps enhance the audio. The Creative Sound Blaster X4 is a direct successor to the excellent Sound Blaster X3. I ended up putting the Surround effect off entirely and think it sounds better, especially in games. The front panel includes a conveniently located 1/4' microphone input and 1/4' headphone jack with a studio quality headphone amp and volume control. The result is some really weird echoy sounds to almost everything. USB Sound Blaster X-Fi HD is an audiophile-grade sound system with premium connectivity for your Notebook or PC. I'm curious what settings you guys are finding works best for you? I noticed that the "Surround" effect in SBX actually forces the surround effect in everything - including native 5.1 sources. I always thought that the rear channels in games were muddy and often too low, who knew it was just the card itself? I bought a set of Creative Gigaworks T-40 Series II powered hifi speakers, (2.0 because of lack of sub space), but my PC was still muddy sounding, so I bought this Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi HD USB sound card to compliment them, and BINGO, the system sounds crazy amazing. I have to agree with Valagard that positional audio is MUCH better with this card. Got the Z today and after a lot of tweaking I'm starting to enjoy it more over my Titanium card.
